Dressing up your dog - a must or a fashion statement?

Well, both, exactly in that order.

During the cold seasons, if you have a short-haired, low belly or vulnerable dog, putting a coat on his back and covering his core is often a necessity.

Long-haired dogs in their prime, such as German Shepards, Retrievers, Huskies or the likes, have a built-in fur coat which defies the elements, so unless their health condition requires it, you should not dress them up.

Who's cold? Who?

Doxies, Frenchies, Boston Terriers, Vizslas, Chihuahuas, Pugs and all those other dogs running around naked thrive in warmer habitats. These breeds freeze their butts off, and some of them are genetically more vulnerable to illness when the temperature drops. They are our best friends and they keep us warm inside, so it's our duty to keep them warm outside.

Besides low belly and short-haired ones, dogs who have trouble with arthritis (like senior dogs), a weak immune system, diabetes, hair growth issues, kidney, heart disease, or hormonal imbalances can feel comfier with an extra layer of protection on a chilly walk.

Anecdotes from Dachshund land

Our two Doxies used to be quite confused when it started snowing. They love playing in the snow and digging out poop and bones but do not realize it's what makes them shiver. They did not last long outside but when they were back inside, they immediately asked to be taken back outside. You can imagine the conversations we had with them. Luckily, dressing them up and keeping them as dry as possible helps, so we now enjoy a good snowball fight in our garden. We'd love to hear about your challenges during the cold seasons, let's touch base here.

Yes, dog parents can have nice things too

Most of us share our homes with our dogs, only the best arrangement the world has seen. In the spirit of full disclosure, we also benefit from dressing them up. Even after a short walk in the rain, they always shake the water and dirt off after we get inside, making a royal mess. Every freakin' time. Now we simply take off the raincoat right before we get inside, most dirt and water stays on the waxed cotton, and they will be ready to snuggle on the couch in no time.

At dressmepup, we like to blend in but we also like to make a fashion statement. We believe dogs are beautiful creatures as they are, so our attire humbly compliments them and the surroundings they like to explore. We value comfort and utility, but our creativity doesn't stop there. A slick, minimalistic design, respectful colours and sustainable fabrics contribute to the great outdoors' aesthetic and health. OK, they make us look pretty good as well. There, we said it.

And one last tip: we only recommend using our coats outside, during cold, rainy and windy weather and only for the canine populations we mentioned above. Always be mindful of your dog for signs of discomfort or overheating, they are always your best reference. See you outside!
