“Getting a dog changed my understanding of love.”
I think it was a year before finding ourselves at this turning point, when me and my boyfriend desperately wanted a four-legged companion. We couldn’t help but jealousy and awe with every dog we passed on the street. We just had to have one, and nothing was going to stop us (though my parents, his parents, friends and family all tried).
While I had been warned that my 27-year-old self wasn’t ready to be responsible for taking care of another being, no one really explained why. What could be so hard about having a dog, I kept wondering?
Stevie was not the easiest puppy. We were dealing with typical stressful puppy problems like potty training, destroyed socks, and obedience training. We were in over our heads.
There were a lot of rough days, and there are still times that I want to pull my hair out in frustration. And while sometimes I think Stevie was the right decision for us, in my heart, I know he was the best decision of my life. As I got to know our new puppy, I got to know myself and my relationship. I know who I am under personal stress and I’m empowered with that understanding. I know that my relationship with my boyfriend, who is now my husband, stands stronger than ever. And I know that I can share a home, a life and the responsibility of another being with someone I love – and nothing can beat that.
No doubt, the moment I met Stevie was the best moment of my life. This puppy, who is now a year and a half old, changed my understanding of love forever."
